A Primer on Livestock Air Quality

چکیده

What is air quality? Zhang (2005) defines air quality as the degree of pollution of clean air. Clean air is the air that is free from impurities. Air quality can be determined by measuring the concentration of pollutants in the air. The lower the concentration of airborne pollutants, the better is the air quality. Auvermann (2006) defined air pollutants as compounds or materials that, when suspended in or mixed with air, degrade air quality and impair its utility for any of a wide range of purposes. Emission of pollutants is the release or discharge of a substance into the environment. Generally refers to the release of gases or particulates into the air. Emissions load on the environment in terms of mass per unit time is the product of pollutant concentration and the air flow rate (e.g., load = concentration x ventilation rate). Confined Feeding Operations (CFOs) can affect air quality through emissions of gases (ammonia and hydrogen sulfide), particulate matter, volatile organic and odour. Emissions from CFOs come from three primary sources: manure storage facilities, animal housing, and land application of manure. Emissions of pollutants depend on many factors such as temperature, humidity, ventilation rates, wind speed, ventilation rate, housing and manure management systems, and animal characteristics (species, size and density). Effective reduction of overall emissions of air pollutants will most likely include several of control strategies rather than any single one.

Livestock GRACEnet: A Workgroup Dedicated to Evaluating and Mitigating Emissions from Livestock Production.

Ammonia, greenhouse gases, and particulate emissions from livestock operations can potentially affect air quality at local, regional, and even global scales. These pollutants, many of which are generated through various anthropogenic activities, are being increasingly scrutinized by regulatory authorities. Regulation of emissions from livestock production systems will ultimately increase on far...

Chapter 3 . 0 Air Quality Issues

This chapter will describe the agents that emanate from livestock facilities, waste storages and manure application sites associated with livestock production. This will include those agents of concern within barns and air contaminants beyond the barn. These may be on the farm in the vicinity of CAFOs or off the farm at locations or in communities adjacent to CAFOs. This chapter will also brief...

Gas-to-Particle Conversion Process between Ammonia, Acid Gases, and Fine Particles in the Atmosphere

Ammonia emissions are associated with many agricultural operations including animal and poultry operations, waste and wastewater treatment operations, and fertilizer and manure land applications. The fate of ammonia released to atmosphere is affected by interaction with other gases, aerosols, and fine particles. These interactions affect the gas-to-particle conversion. This process alters ammon...

Ammonia assessment from agriculture: U.S. status and needs.

Recent studies suggest that human activities accelerate the production of reactive nitrogen on a global scale. Increased nitrogen emissions may lead to environmental impacts including photochemical air pollution, reduced visibility, changes in biodiversity, and stratospheric ozone depletion. In the last 50 yr, emissions of ammonia (NH3), which is the most abundant form of reduced reactive nitro...

Effects of Feeding on Air Quality Measures

Livestock production causes unavoidable losses to the environment, and the concerns related to aerial emissions from livestock production is ever increasing. Losses to the atmosphere occur during respiration and from fresh and stored feces and urine. These losses may be an environmental burden as contributors to global climate change (CO2, CH4), regional particulate or acid deposition concerns ...
